Fetsum Yohannes was born in Asmara in 1965. As a civil servant, Fetsum's father was always moving from one part of Eritrea to another. As a result, Fetsum's school years involved different schools in different regions of Eritrea. His musical interest took root in the early eighties when he taught himself to play the Krar made in a rudimentary fashion using a tin drum and wood. At first, Fetsum did not know how to tune this traditional six-string instrument and just managed to play elementary tunes.
